Half Indian, half British Fiona Sinha, was born in Aberdeen in 1979, and raised in Newcastle. Aleksandar Stanic was born in Croatia in 1979, and moved to Hamburg, Germany in 1990. In 1998, both moved to London to begin a foundation course at Central St Martins.
Working on their first project together, Fiona and Aleksandar connected immediately and have been a couple ever since. Both remaining at St Martins, Fiona went on to study a BA in Fashion Design, Womenswear, while Aleksandar began a BA in Fashion Design and Print. Finishing their degrees in 2002, Fiona began the Womanswear MA at St Martins, while Aleksandar worked freelance as a print designer.
Teaming up in 2004, Fiona and Aleksandar entered the Fashion Fringe competition, which was searching for a new generation of designers. As one of the four finalists, Fiona and Aleksandar created their first collection together, which was shown at London Fashion Week as part of Fashion Fringe. This signalled the beginning of a new label: SINHA—STANIC. Soon after the show, they signed with AEFFE, the prestigious Italian luxury goods company.
Received with immense enthusiasm, their first independent show took place during London Fashion Week in February 2005, their second – with even greater critical and commercial success – this September. Both have been sponsored by Topshop’s New Generation scheme.
